How to glorify God at work

The Christian Book for Men – Honouring God and people in the workplace

Honouring God and people in the workplace.

As working Christians, one of our aims is to ensure we are honouring God and people at work.  Hence, we discuss this in Volume Two Chapter Three.  Firstly, we look at Holy Scripture to see what we can learn about how to glorify God at work.

The Bible tells us it’s not only important to honour God at work, but also the people we interact with.  As a matter of fact, the principles also apply when we are in the presence of people generally.  For example, while we are out and about and living day to day in the world.

This is how I start the chapter…

‘The purpose of this book is to detail what God has to say to men about [various things].  [For example] how we can become more like Him, overcome temptation and sin, and behave better towards those we love.  In this chapter I… discuss what God has to say [about] how to behave at work.

God’s Word talks less about how we are to behave at work than… about other aspects of our life.  I suspect that is because in the days of the Bible, there were no factories churning out mobile phones, wrought iron gates, uPVC windows, garage doors, aircraft, ships, cars, widgets etc., etc.  Furthermore, there were no ‘global’ businesses, as such.  [In fact,] most people worked on the land or ran uncomplicated businesses, or were employed by small business owners.  Yes, some goods were exported, but nothing on the scale of today.

…I believe Jesus … would have a lot to say about the way some [of us] behave at work [today].’

What can we learn from the Bible?

‘So what can we learn to help us behave in a godly way at work?  And bring honour to God and our colleagues in the workplace?

Well, before we look at what the Bible specifically says about work, let’s remember what Jesus considers the greatest Commandments to be… “ ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’  This is the first and greatest commandment.  The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for others].’  The whole Law and the [writings of the] Prophets depend on these two commandments.” (Matthew chapter 22 verses 37 to 40).

Note that last verse… Jesus is saying everything you read in God’s Word should take into account the importance of these two Great Commandments.

Therefore it seems clear to me, if we want to know how to behave at work (whether that be working at home, in an office, factory, Government department, hospital, school – wherever is your place of employment), we need to ask ourselves two simple questions:  1. Is the way I work, or behave at work, honouring God?  2. Is the way I work, or behave at work, honouring other people?’

I really hope this chapter will enable many to better appreciate the importance of honouring God and people at work.  In the meantime, click here to read the Introduction to the next chapter ‘Loving our Parents in Difficult Times’.
